Petition Against New Virginia Civil Traffic Fines
I just wanted to post a quick update in regards to the new ridiculous civil traffic fines in Virginia. There is a petition against it online, and I encourage all Virginia residents to sign it!
If you want to vent, feel free to post your comments below on what you think about the new fines.
7/12/07 Update: There are now over 22,000 signatures on the petition as of about noon today. It looks like it’s really starting to spread around, as the numbers are getting higher much quicker. Make sure to sign and spread the word around so that it can really make a difference!
7/13/07 Update: There are now close to 50,000 signatures as of about 10:40am, it’s definitely picking up! A co-worker this morning told me he was watching NBC4 news this morning, and they mentioned that Virginia was considering repealing the fines. I haven’t been able to find a story about that anywhere, so if you know of one, post the link. It looks like there may be some hope!
7/17/07 Update: We just hit the 100,000 mark!? That’s a huge milestone, but lets keep it going.

I think it may be better to promote just one petition to try and maximize the number of signatures? There are only 1,300 sigs on that petition, compared to about 50,000 on the first one.
Nothing wrong with trying to make a difference, I just think it would be more effective to put all of our efforts into the same petition so that the numbers can be more drastic

I don’t disagree, however I thought it would be worth pointing it out since it does have direct email links to the Governor, the entire Senate, and the entire House. Whether people choose to sign it or not is up to them. I only pointed it out because it has easy access to emails.

The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says in part in Section 1. “nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
How charging Virginians and not charging non-Virginians is “equal protection” is beyond me. How did our Virginia Attorney General let this bill slip through?

07/17/2007 4:41 pmi think the new laws for va sucks, as if they dont already have enough people in court every monday and every other date too! so i think it is crazy to seperate other states from the laws and rob your own citizens who live here every day & pay taxes just like any other state!

07/23/2007 9:09 pmI am going to sign the petition. I believe it is unconstitutional to have one law for the citizens of a state and another set of laws for visitors. If we are striving for safety, then the laws should be across the board.

07/26/2007 1:22 pmI realize many Virginians drive too fast, however it is difficult to follow the speed limit when people from out of state are flying and leaving you in their dust.
