New Wheels On The G35 Are On!
Last week I told you guys that I got new 19″ Volk SF Challenge wheels for my daily driver, a 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe. The wheels were supposed to arrive on Friday, which would have been perfect as I would have the weekend to put them on and also make sure I had time to learn how to change front brake pads since I had never done that before. DHL dropped the ball, and weren’t able to get them in on Friday. After speaking with them on the phone they were going try and do a Saturday delivery…unfortunately that did not happen either.
Today I tracked the packages, and saw they were delivered to the house. I decided to work remotely from home for my day job because I didn’t want $3,500 worth of wheels and tires just sitting outside of my house.
I got home and during whatever free time I had from working I worked on swapping the wheels. I also took on changing the front brake pads. A quick call to my good friend Alex for a fast explanation of what to do, and him assuring that it was pretty easy, and I was ready to go. It turned out to be really easy (a lot better than the 50 hours it took 3 of us to install a twin turbo on my old 350Z!) , and once the wheels were off the car the new pads were in within 10-15 minutes.
Now my car will pass state inspection, which I’ll do tomorrow so I can get rid of the rejection sticker on my windshield! The new wheels look great (would be even better if I lowered the car slightly), what do you think?

08/21/2007 11:52 amThe wheels look fantastic! In the bottom picture, right near the bottom of the wheel, is that something yellow on there or just a reflection or something in the picture?
Related to wheels, what products do you use to keep your wheels looking nice and clean?

08/21/2007 12:00 pmLol, that’s just a reflection of a yellow pole…you can see a better reflection in the first picture on the passenger side door.
I’ll have to take a picture…but for the polished lip I use Mother’s Mag & Aluminum polish: https://store.mothers.com/product_info.php?products_id=48
Other than that I just wash the wheels like I wash the car. I use a mit, and I have a separate one for the wheels and the car. They key is to make sure they never get too dirty. For a car that you want to keep looking great, you should hand wash it at least 1 time every 1-2 weeks.
Maybe I’ll make a post about my car washing techniques. After owning a black daily driver show car, I learned the best ways to wash a car.

08/21/2007 12:06 pmThanks for the info. When I first got my car, I had a whole process for washing the car and what not but as the miles rolled on I’ve been bad about keeping it clean.
On the wheels, I have a paste that helps keep the brake dust from adhering to the wheels and makes it much easier to clean. I cannot remember the name of the product, it was from Poorboy’s World though.
You ever visit the Detail City car forums? That is where I had learned my washing techniques. It would be interesting to see a post on it though.

08/21/2007 12:49 pmYeah there are even sprays you use for the wheels when you wash the car that are supposed to do the same thing. You can also get low dust brake pads like EBC Green Stuff to help with that. But if you’re washing your car once a week or two, it shouldn’t be THAT big of a deal.
I haven’t been to the detailing forums, but I’ve picked up tips through a couple of forums that I’ve been a member of. I’m sure there are better ways, but I think I will do a post of my techniques….maybe even a video.

08/21/2007 1:50 pmCar detailing is a very involved thing, much more than I ever thought that is for sure.
When I first bought the car, I was up until 4am as I clayed and washed the car two times, applied numerous coats of paint protectant, wax, detailed the wheels, etc. I’ve got some pics buried in my site of the before/after of that first cleaning.
Now I am lucky if I have the time to give it a good washing.

08/21/2007 1:56 pmOh most definitely! I’m good friends with a guy that has a 350Z sponsored by Meguiar’s. We had a guy from Meguiars come out and teach a small group of us (about 8 cars) a ton….and I had my car detailed for free
Another good friend of mine (the guy that got me into motorcycles and dirt bikes) just started a side-business detailing company, and he uses some crazy stuff, but the cars he does come out insane.

08/21/2007 2:38 pmWhat exactly is involved with having your car sponsored? Is it a show car? I’ve always wanted to find a company to use my car as a rolling billboard on the highways of Chicago, now that would be passive income.

08/21/2007 2:45 pmI have no clue why I would have just had to moderate your comment lol but ok.
His car is a show car, yes. So for ActiveTuning when we look for potential sponsors it’s all about ROI. If I’m going to give you a discount on parts or give you parts at no cost, I want it to be worth my money. That usually includes some sort of decal thing, maybe putting flyers or business cards on their car during shows. I like to see somebody that has already done a decent amount of good modifications to their car or has a track record already. Maybe other sponsors, a list of shows their car has been in, a list of upcoming shows they plan their car to be in, etc, etc. Sometimes we’ll make more of an exception for people that are popular members of forums that post a lot…they constantly post pics, promote our products in posts (not in a spam way), etc.
So usually it’s not your run of the mill guy with a car that wants a free part if that makes sense.
Derek
08/21/2007 2:48 pmMakes a lot of sense, thanks for the explanation. I guess my dream of being paid to plaster my car with ads has gone up in smoke, lol.
